Changes to Free School Meals (FSM) from September 2026
There are some important changes to Free School Meals (FSM) that took effect from September 2026.
What is changing?
The government has expanded Free School Meals so that more children will be eligible.
From September 2026:
All children in households receiving Universal Credit will be able to get Free School Meals.
This means many more families may now qualify.
Different types of support
There will now be two types of eligibility:
Targeted FSM - (Fully funded support) - households receiving Universal Credit with annual net earnings of £7,400 or less
Free school meals
Extra funding for the school (Pupil Premium)
Access to holiday clubs (HAF programmes) and some travel support
Expanded FSM - (Meals-only support) - Pupils from households receiving Universal Credit whose annual household earnings exceed the £7,400 threshold.
Free school meals only
Annual checks
From 2026, schools are required to check eligibility every year.
You do not need to apply again each year, however we must confirm your eligibility by carrying out a check. These checks will take place between July and September each year.
Registering for Free School Meals:
Ensures your child receives a free, healthy meal each day
Helps the school receive additional funding to support learning, resources, and activities
Even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 (where meals are already free), it is still important to register as this funding supports the school.
If you think you may qualify for Free School Meals, please contact the school office on office@cc.thedcet.com and we will be able to run an eligibility check.
